TROPICAL STORM WATCH

An announcement is made when winds of 36 to 73 mph are possible within 48 hours.

TROPICAL STORM WARNING

Sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph are expected within 36 hours.

HURRICANE WATCH

An announcement is made when winds of 74 mph or higher are possible. The Hurricane Watch is issued 48 hours in advance of anticipated onset of tropical storm-force winds.

HURRICANE WARNING

An announcement that sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected. The warning is issued 36 hours in advance of anticipated onset of tropical storm-force winds. Dangerously high water and waves may continue even though winds may be less than hurricane force.

EVACUATION

If an event calls for an evacuation, Hampton and Newport News visitors should evacuate using the following:
  • Interstate 64
  • Interstate 664 North
  • US Route 17 North
  • US Route 60
  • West Route 143
During severe weather, the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry connecting Surry and James City County will not be available. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is not an evacuation route. Visit cbbt.com for closure information.

STAY INFORMED!

  • Download the Ready Virginia mobile app to receive alerts.
  • Get current info from local TV and radio.
  • Ask community officials about evacuation and shelter plans, including pet-friendly locations.

PREPARING YOUR MOBILE DEVICE BEFORE A DISASTER:

  • Keep a list of emergency phone numbers. Include one out-of-town family contact. Keep your list up to date.
  • Have charged batteries and car chargers for phones, laptops, and other mobile devices.
  • Sign up for an emergency alert notification through Hampton and Newport News governments.

COMMUNICATING DURING AND AFTER A DISASTER

  • Call 9-1-1 for life threatening emergencies.
  • Call 3-1-1 for shelter information.
  • Texting, emails and social media are good ways to stay in touch during a disaster.
  • Keep any phone calls brief. Conserve battery power by reducing phone screen brightness, placing phone in airplane mode and closing apps not in use.
  • Tune into local TV and radio stations for important alerts.
